WHAT is a hostel/hostal? Hostels, called "hostales" in Spanish and "hostals" in Catalán, are usually very quaint (small), family owned and operated hotels and can be found in some of the most historical, interesting, and active parts of the city at very good prices. Hostels in Spain should not be confused with Youth-Hostels which are called "albergues juveniles" in Spanish. WHERE to stay? Many people prefer to stay somehwere along Las Ramblas, the main "vertical" street which runs alongside the Gothic Quarter from the Plaça de Catalunya all the way to the tower of Christopher Columbus at the beach. Some prefer to stay in the largely pedestrian, old Gothic Quarter itself while others prefer the more modern locations around the Placa Catalunya or in the Eixample district. Many FC Barcelona Barça fans may want a hostel near the Camp Nou stadium. Wherever you stay, most every place in Barcelona is accessible by their elaborate metro system. During my last visit to Barcelona I stayed at 4 different lower-cost establishments, eaching having its own style. I feel comfortable recommending all based on price-point, location, and ammenities offered. Lower-cost establishments, in general, will never satisfy your every want, desire, or requirement but these 4 did a pretty good job making my stay in Barcelona rather comfortable. These establishments, in chronological order of visit, were: Residencia Australia (near Plaza de Catalunya - inexpensive!), Hostal Mare Nostrum (ON Las Ramblas - nice!), Hostal Martina Bailén (in L'Eixample - elegant!), & Pensión Casa Goya (near Plaza de la Universitat - like a hotel!). |
